How to Determine Fit

A professional counseling relationship is just like any other relationship in that what makes the relationship work is a mix of personality, mutual investment in the relationship, communication, and trust. Sometimes you have to “date” (figuratively, of course) a few therapists before you find the right one. Remember when I said it’s important to know what you need help with and your goals for counseling? Well, both are critical for determining fit. At minimum, you want someone who can demonstrate competence and confidence to help you—and somebody you feel comfortable sharing your story with.

Start with the information you can find out about their skills and specialization. Do they say they work with Black women specifically? Do they work with the issue(s) you need help with? Does the profile or website speak to you in some way? I’ve had many self-referred clients say things to me like “It was something about your eyes” or “You look like you meant business” or simply “I chose you because you were a Black woman.”

Another way to determine fit is through a consultation. Phone or video consultations are essentially a brief prescreening opportunity for both the counselor and client. For the counselor, a phone or video consultation helps to determine whether the client is a good fit based on referral issue and the counselor’s scope of practice. For example, the counselor might ask what issue you are seeking help with and who referred you. They will likely provide some general information about their practice and how to begin counseling services with them.

For the client, a phone or video consultation can help you get a feel for the counselor’s personality and approach. The consultation is an important opportunity to ask questions that may be important to determine fit. For example, if you haven’t previously determined it, ask, “Have you ever worked with Black women clients?” “Have you worked with issue?” Once all questions and concerns have been addressed, and if it seems like a mutual fit, the counselor will likely want to schedule you for a first session.
